Lorna May Smith, “Gram”, was a special Mom and Grandmother who was filled with unconditional love for her family. She had a keen business sense, a love for the beach, and a thirst for knowledge about health and fitness. Even at the age of 80 she attended exercise class three times a week, sometimes serving as the class leader. Some unusual symptoms caused her family to seek medical treatment, and it was quickly determined that Gram had brain cancer in the form of GBM, or Glioblastoma. The cancer was fast-growing, and with radiation therapy and chemotherapy, she was able to live nine months from the time of diagnosis. Gram’s family knew of Dr. Marnie Rose through the ABC seriesHouston Medical, and through her family’s relationship with ABC-13. They joined Run for the Rose in memory of their Mother and Grandmother, and to raise awareness of the need for dollars which go directly to research. Even though it was not available for her, Lorna May Smith–“Gram”– would have wanted to find a cure!
