Robert “Bob” Rubin was diagnosed with a grade 3 anaplastic astrocytoma in November, 2007. He underwent surgery by Dr. Bob Blacklock, radiation by Dr. Lu, and chemotherapy treatment for two years under the watchful eye of oncologist, Dr. Yvonne Kew.

Before surgery, Bob was a very busy internal medicine physician in the practice of Associates in Medicine and affiliated with Methodist Hospital since 1981. He and his wife, Marlene, raised four “everything-you-could-ask-for” children (Shari, Mindy, Jack, Paul) who had all finished college by the time of the diagnosis. After surgery, Bob experienced paralysis on the left side of his body and speech difficulties. He worked extremely hard with the help of physical, occupational, and speech therapists to regain strength.

After he retired from his practice of medicine, Bob’s daughter, Shari, took over his practice in November, 2011, and contributes to the care of his patients. His wife, Marlene, retired from HISD in June, 2012, to take care of Bob full-time. Marlene was Bob’s activity director responsible for scheduling appointments, outings with friends and family, traveling, and taking care of Bob’s daily needs.

Since diagnosis, Bob’s immediate family grew with a daughter-in-law (Jenn), a son-in-law (Dennis), daughter-in-law (Perla), son-in-law (Nick), and three grandchildren.

After a 7-year battle with brain cancer, Bob passed away surrounded by family on February 25, 2015. We already miss him!
