Beverly Ward McCarthy was called home on Tuesday, March 13, 2012 after a brave fight with brain cancer. She was surrounded by family while Tom Petty’s Wildflowers played.

Beverly graduated from Yorktown High School in 1964 and George Washington University in 1968. She married William Hart McCarthy in 1965 at Rocksprings Church in Arlington, Virginia. She taught at Robert E. Lee High School in Fairfax County. She moved to San Antonio in 1980.

After taking a few years off to raise her children, William, Kevin and Anne, she returned to teaching in 1986 to Tom C. Clark High School. She attended UTSA, taking one night class at a time, and received her Master’s of Science in Mathematics in 1991. In 1992, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She taught through all of her treatments and was in remission for 19 years. In 2000, Beverly moved to Northside Health Careers High School to be the mathematics department chair.  About this same time, Beverly began her professional affiliation with College Board when she became an Advanced Placement Calculus Reader, leading summer institutes and finally becoming a table leader at the AP Reading.

She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Daisy Ward. She is survived by her husband, William Hart McCarthy; children, William Jr., Kevin and Anne; grandchildren, Taylor, Kacy, Corbin and Conner; brother, William Ward and other extended family members.

To honor Beverly’s lifetime achievement in teaching, Northside Health Careers High School and the McCarthy family want to fund a scholarship in her memory. Memorial donations may be made to the Beverly McCarthy Memorial Fund, 4229 Goshen Pass, San Antonio, TX 78230 for the Beverly McCarthy AP Scholarship.
